Oakton Community College Announces Nine Tenure Track Faculty Openings

The faculty positions are in Art, Basic Nurse Assistant Training, Chemistry, English (3 openings), Graphic Design, Nursing, and Paralegal Studies. All positions start in August 2013. Located in the near north suburban Chicago communities of Skokie and Des Plaines, Oakton Community College is a caring community of educators dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning. Faculty employed by Oakton are current in their use of evolving technologies, active in promoting critical thinking, and committed to challenging their students to be knowledgeable, ethical, and capable global citizens. Cultural competency is defined as a composite awareness, emotional maturity, and insights and skills including, a self-insight and the ability to suspend judgment and take responsibility for one's self, self-control of emotions and demonstration of empathy; experience with and success in valuing and working with people of different gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation; and adaptability and flexibility in understanding and addressing problems and opportunities in situations where different cultural perspectives and points of view are in play. Applicants must be strong communicators and effective classroom facilitators in a student-centered environment; committed to college-level teaching and innovation in learning, current and skilled in the use of technologies; and active in promoting critical thinking. Oakton expects professional competence, strong leadership qualities, professional development participation, and institutional and departmental service from faculty. Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred. The Art faculty hire will teach art history and studio art courses (painting, drawing, 2D, 3D), with 50% or more of annual teaching responsibilities in the art history. This individual hired may serve as a department chair or coordinator. The hire for the Basic Nurse Assistant Training (BNAT) will demonstrate the integral ability to teach didactic, laboratory, and clinical components of the BNAT program. This position will be based out of our campus in Skokie. General Chemistry I and II, with opportunities to teach other departmental offerings will be the Chemistry hire's teaching responsibilities. Opportunities exist for individual or collaborative, interdisciplinary undergraduate research. Three faculty generalists in the teaching of English are sought who can teach a range of college English courses with the additional qualifications required to teach Composition, Developmental Reading and/or Writing, or English as a Second Language. Faculty experienced and proficient in Graphic Design, Photography, or Art with graphic design work experience in a computer environment are sought to teach Graphic Design. The individual hired may serve as a department chair. Faculty with prior college teaching experience in Psychiatric, Obstetrics, or Newborn nursing are preferred for our Nursing opening. This position will be based out of our campus in Des Plaines. Practicing paralegals are sought for the Paralegal Studies faculty opening. The individual hired will serve as the department chair.
