Kassandra Rivera of Texas Southern U Ranks In Top 10 Nationally in NCAA

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on December 17, 2012 A Sophomore from the Rio Grande Valley has taken Texas Southern Golf to another level. Kassandra Rivera played her way to a top 10 national ranking in NCAA Division I women’s golf. Rivera’s 71.63 average puts her in the company of players from powerhouse golf programs like Florida, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, UCLA and USC. “Never in the history of Texas Southern golf has a player ranked that high nationally,” said TSU head coach Hank Stewart. “In my years as a player at TSU, an assistant coach and a head coach, I cannot recall any HBCU player ranking in the top 10.” Rivera played eight rounds and captured four first place finishes during the fall season. Her lowest round of 66 at the Prairie View Invitational ties her with the number two player in the nation. Rivera also has the lowest average for “subpar strokes per round” (2.33) among the top twenty players in NCAA Division I women’s golf. “Kassandra’s accomplishment is a major coup for Texas Southern.” Stewart said. “It shows that you don’t have to attend a major university to rank among the best golfers in the country.” The Lady Tigers golf team kicks off their spring schedule by hosting the TSU/SWAC Golf Tournament on March 3rd -5th, 2013 at the Links on the Bayou in Alexandria, Louisiana.
