MARQUEE MATCHUP OF THE WEEK:

# 18 Shaw Lady Bears (8-1) at Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings (8-2) Thursday January 3

With the non-conference portion of the schedule complete, CIAA conference action kicks off in earnest this week. 2013 kicks off with the first of many key regular season matchups as teams jockey for position with an eye on postseason play. After winning the national championship and the CIAA title last season, the Shaw Lady Bears will go into each game with a bull’s-eye planted firmly on their backs and teams clamoring to deal the CIAA’s most dominant program a loss. Elizabeth City State gets the first shot at trying to take down the 18th ranked Lady Bears when they host Shaw on Thursday at the Vaughn Center. After closing out last season by losing seven of their last nine games, the Lady Vikings have begun with a strong 8-2 start with their two losses coming on the road at the hands of Bloomfield and Division I Maryland-Eastern Shore by a combined eight points. The Lady Vikings average 73.6 points per game and feature a balanced scoring attack with six players averaging at least seven points per game. All-CIAA forward Stephanie Harper leads ECSU in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). Shaw has won seven straight following a win over Felician College on Sunday. Like ECSU, the Lady Bears have a variety of scoring options with seven players averaging 8.0 points per game or better. Senior Taylor Dalrymple has emerged as a dominant inside presence for the Lady Bears. The 6-1 forward averages 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds, both tops on the team. In Shaw’s 63-44 win over Assumption on Saturday, Dalrymple dominated, scoring 25 points and pulling down 16 rebounds, both game highs. The Lady Bears are averaging 76.4 points a game and are one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, out rebounding opponents by nearly 17 boards a game. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
