Posted By: Frederick Roberts on January 09, 2013 PRAIRIE VIEW, TX: - November 16 was a great day for the Power 100 Award winners presented by the Prairie View A&M University Chapter of Collegiate 100 and 100 Collegiate Women of America when at its inaugural “Black Tie Scholarship & Awards Gala” at the university. The gala event honored several achievers under the theme: “Mission Possible: A Command Performance.” Honorees were Coach Toyelle Wilson, the 2011-2012 Women’s SWAC championship Basketball team, Coach Glenn White and the 2011-2012 Women’s SWAC championship bowling team, from Prairie View A&M University; Mayor of Prairie View, Texas Mr. Frank D. Jackson and Mayor of Hempstead, Texas Mr. Michael L. Wolfe, Sr. When asked why a Gala of this magnitude, Collegiate President Patrick Gray stated, “The gala is a way to recognize and honor persons for their service and achievement in their respective areas. They are deserving of the award because they are keeping it 100™ and it is also a way to generate funds to support scholarships for needy students.” According to records, this was the first student sponsored event to honor the Athletic Teams at the university. The women’s basketball is a three-time consecutive SWAC Champions and two-time NCAA Tournament representative. The Bowling Team won the SWAC Championship and is ranked 19th in the National Tenpin Coaches Association Final Poll of 20 best NCAA women's bowling teams in the nation. The team’s achievement is phenomenal, considering there is no bowling alley at the university. This historic night began with a reception and entertainment from the Phi Mu Alpha Honorary Music Fraternity, followed by a sumptuous meal prepared by Sodexo Food Service. A featured part of the gala was the formal pinning of the 29 new members of the Collegiate 100 Men and Women at Prairie View A&M University by Collegiate Membership Directors Breanna Mayes and Kelvin Washington. Mr. Darnell Joseph, Network Director at Texas Southern University and President Emeritus of the 100 Black Men of Metro Houston, Inc., and TSU Collegiate Advisor, provided inspirational words to the honorees and new members. Other program participants were Miss Janae Anderson, Mr. Justin Whitaker and Mr. Vincent Ellis, all members of Collegiate 100. Mr. Ross Hampton, the Collegiate Chaplain, served as Master of Ceremony. Special presentations were made to Career Services Department and Gala Sponsors by Mr. Patrick Gray and Miss Faydrian Pearson, President of the Collegiate 100 and 100 Collegiate Women of America, respectively. All proceeds from the gala went to a Scholarship fund for the children mentored by the Prairie View Chapter. The Collegiate 100 is an auxiliary organization sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Metro Houston, Inc. and was created by Frederick V. Roberts, who also serves as the 100 Advisor. The mission is to support the 100 in its four for the future programs: mentoring, education, health and wellness and economic empowerment to improve the quality of life of the community. Dr. Clement Glenn, professor of Educational Leadership at the university is the primary advisor. Plans are already underway for the 2013 gala, which promises to be greater.
