Cheyney University Hosts Youth Day January 11th
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 10, 2013

Cheyney University is hosting a Youth Day on Friday, January 11 as part of the annual PSAC “Take a Kid to a Game Day” from 10 am to 4 pm on the historic campus.

The program is free for children in elementary and middle school and their families. The purpose is to involve the community in campus events.

"We are expecting over 300 students from area schools including Global Leadership Charter School, Parkway Center City High School, Thurgood Marshall School, Motivational High School, and RTC Cream Family School. We have planned the campus tour and fun activities to inspire these young students to include a college education in their future plans," says CU Athletic Director Ruffin Bell.

After checking in at the Cope Hall Gymnasium, guests will receive a tour of the new residence hall, aquaponics facility, athletic center, and historic quadrangle.

They’ll also get a chance to Meet the Mascot and have their picture taken with the wolf, meet Cheyney University’s basketball players, enjoy both the women’s and men’s basketball games against Gannon University, and get some CU giveaways. Children can bring their lunch or purchase pizza, chips and soda for $5.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for area kids to see the Cheyney campus, get a tour of the school, get a feel for what it’s like at Cheyney University, and enjoy an athletic event at the same time,” Bell explains. “It gives our athletes a chance to project themselves as role models. I’m sure some kids will have questions on what it takes to play collegiately.” Bell expects the athletes to talk to the kids about academics, too. Many of CU’s athletes are honor students.

The double-header games are free for everyone—young and old. The women’s game tips off at 1 pm, followed by the men at 3 pm.
