HU's NCAAMP Presents 'How to Love a Black Woman'

Hampton University Department of Psychology's National Center on African American Marriages and Parenting (NCAAMP) will host a panel-led discussion titled, ¡°How to Love a Black Woman¡± Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. This informative, timely, provocative and inspirational community discussion will explore how "black women need and deserve to be loved: honestly, respectfully, carefully, wholeheartedly and completely."

The discussion will include topics such as: true love, intimacy, gender roles, media and other pop culture influences, romance and commitment, physical beauty and spirituality.

Dr. Linda Malone-Col¨®n, chair of the Psychology Department at HU and founder of NCAAMP will be moderating the event. Malone-Col¨®n is currently engaged in research and scholarship aimed at identifying protective and risk factors for African Americans in developingsatisfying and stable marital relationships.

Panelists

Dr. Jeff Gardere ¡°Dr. Jeff¡±, better known as ¡°America¡¯s Psychologist¡±, is among the most respected mental health professionals in the United States. Born in Brooklyn, Dr. Jeff now has a successful private practice in Manhattan and is among the most highly sought-after media experts in the field of mental health. Dr. Jeff was mostrecently the relationship expert on Season 1 of VH1¡äs wildly successful reality show, ¡°Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.¡± Dr. Jeff has authored several books, including his controversial book, ¡°Love Prescription: Ending the War Between Black Men and Women.¡± He is also the co-author of ¡°Practical Parenting¡± with Montel Williams, the Emmy-award winning TV talk show host. Dr.



Jeff¡¯s first book, ¡°Smart Parenting for African Americans: Helping Your Kids Thrive in a Difficult World¡± has been lauded as being ¡°necessary for raising African-American children in today¡¯s society,¡± (Black Issues Book Review). Dr. Jeff is also a monthly columnist for Sister 2 Sister Magazine.



Raymond J. Johnson, pastor of Calvary Revival Church earned a bachelors degree in business and economics from theUniversity of Maine. He holds an MBA and Master of Arts in Law and Public Policy from Regent University. He has also completed his Master's of Divinity and is presently pursing his Doctor of Ministry in African-American Church Leadership, from Fuller Theological Seminary.



Karega Bailey is a graduate of Hampton University and Teach for America alumnus. He earned his Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education at George Mason University. He was an award-winning teacher, including Teacher of the Year at the Shadd Transition Academy where he taught the emotionally disturbed population of high school special education. After teaching 9th Grade special education in Washington D.C, with Teach for America, at 25, Bailey became the youngest dean in the history of the Maya Angelou Public Charter School. At age 26, Bailey is a community healer, an outstanding emerging scholar and the 2012 National Underground Spoken Word Poetry Awards (NUSPA) Best Male Spoken Word Artist in the Nation.
