Strategic Marketing for Historically Black Colleges and Universities HOW ATTRACT ALUMNI, PARENTS, SMALL BUSINESSES, LARGE CORPORATIONS, AND PHILANTHROPIC The value of HBCUs: • HBCUs play a vital role in minority education and the universities need more funding, period! • President Obama recognizes the need for more funding. However, the government cannot give universities enough money to effectively serve academics interests, students, local communities, states, and international interests. Therefore, marketing and communications infrastructure with long-term benefits must be implemented. • There are hundreds of thousands young men and women who are depending on HBCUs. • African American and Latino students will soon comprised about 50% of the nation’s students. HBCUs are necessary if we want to put America ahead in a global society where brainpower is premium. • Underfunding exists, even as far back as the Carter Administration. The Obama administration’s recent funding is only a small antidote to decades of underfunding. • HBCUs produced 25 percent of the nation’s black college graduates and most of the black doctoral degree recipients, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. • Enrollment at HBCUs has risen since the mid-1980s, from about 70,000 students to almost 300,000. • The deep recession and long recovery impacted many HBCUs. In some states, government slashed their higher-education budget, which was more painful for HBCUs because they got less funding. • HBCU decision-makers must lead the charge to maximize other revenue streams. A high alumni giving rate, as many already know, prompts more philanthropic and private donations. • HBCU Connect is a testimony to the value of HBCUs. • Companies who accept government money are always looking for minority talent. Where can they find it? ….. at HBCUs. • PWUs can select an African American student, spend millions of dollars and showcase the results… and that’s good. But what about the other 1,000,000 students or potential students, for example. • Many HBCU graduates work with associates and manage graduates from Ohio State, Texas A&M, MIT, Purdue and many others. • HBCU graduates are in record numbers in the defense sector. • HBCU graduates are in record number as entrepreneurs with businesses selling to the government, from aerospace to information systems (IT) to janitorial.
