Achievement First currently operates 22 schools in Brooklyn, NY, and New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford, CT (and will expand to Rhode Island in 2013). Over the next five years, Achievement First plans to open 10-15 additional schools, spanning the full K-12 spectrum and creating college-prep opportunities for more than 12,000 urban students. Beyond our students and schools, Achievement First is an engaged and prominent partner in the larger conversation about how to improve public education and student achievement in our country. About Team External Relations As a network support team, Achievement First’s external relations team (Team X) is responsible for advocacy, community and parent engagement, and student recruitment. In addition, the external relations team manages relationships with the State Departments of Education in NY and CT, and the Boards of Trustees for 22 Achievement First schools located in Brooklyn, NY and New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford, CT. In 2013, the external relations team will play a key role in building the external relations blueprint for Achievement First’s third geography, Rhode Island. Summary The external relations coordinator plays a crucial role in maintaining strong partnerships with Achievement First school boards of trustees/directors, and ensuring that our schools meet and exceed accountability and compliance requirements. The ideal candidate will be an excellent verbal and written communicator, exceptionally organized and detail oriented, and happy to lead both basic and complex projects as required. The ideal candidate may also be interested in pursuing a legal career or already be in the legal profession. Responsibilities of the external relations coordinator will include but are not limited to: Support the successful execution of board of trustees meetings o Develop strong relationships with board members and spearhead key governance initiatives to help engage board members in supporting the AF mission o Manage the execution of bi-monthly school board of trustees/directors meetings in New York and Connecticut: o Plan and coordinate meeting logistics, including attendance, space, food, and supplies o Work closely with director of governance to generate agendas and produce materials o Ensure clear and enthusiastic communication regarding the preparation and follow‐up of meetings with participants o Design and improve systems for tracking and analyzing governance data, including attendance, giving, committee membership, and other key measures o Draft internal and external communications with stakeholders, such as AF leaders and board members o Schedule meetings, manage requests, and provide overall coordination for board events in New York and Connecticut o Complete additional tasks, such as developing annual board calendar and processing board membership changes, annual forms and evaluations, etc. Support strong authorizer relationships and compliance with laws and regulations o Contribute to the creation of required accountability and compliance reports for New York and Connecticut schools o Enter and analyze student achievement data and other key measures to report performance against charter goals o Draft language for legislative, advocacy, and other related communications o Provide planning and logistical support for authorizer evaluation visits to schools Provide team support o Complete projects as identified to support the external relations team Skills and Characteristics Interest in performing a critical support role with significant opportunities for growth in a fast‐paced, entrepreneurial environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills Detail‐oriented and highly organized Highly motivated and capable of seeing projects through from beginning to end Ability to work autonomously as well as take direction as needed Flexible, mature, and humble Sense of humor, strong work ethic, “roll‐up‐my‐sleeves” attitude Results‐oriented and willing to do “whatever it takes” Belief in the Achievement First mission and educational model Highly capable in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat Educational Background and Work Experience Bachelor’s degree from a competitive college or university 2+ years of work experience Expertise and/or interest in education policy, board development, or communications preferred Some weekend/evening work will be required and some travel between Connecticut (Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven) and Brooklyn, NY will be requested. Compensation Salary for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience. Additionally, Achievement First offers a comprehensive benefits package.
