Successful candidates for these positions will have the appropriate subject and language expertise, the ability to provide a wide range of service activities that engage diverse groups of users, and he or she should be able to work effectively and collegially with staff, faculty, and students of diverse cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds. All of these positions are part of the Library’s newly formed Research Unit. American and British History Subject Specialist MLibrary seeks an innovative, client-centered, subject librarian to join a dynamic, collegial team engaged in advancing research, collections, teaching, and learning in a client-oriented environment. As the liaison to the Department of History and to the Department of American Culture, the subject specialist will coordinate library services and initiatives to a diverse community of faculty and students. Additionally, this position is directly responsible for collection development, reference and instruction, and research consultation in the fields of American and British history and culture. Candidates with relevant background in these subject areas, and an ALA accredited Masters degree, or advanced degree with a strong interest in the opportunities and challenges for scholarship and teaching posed by our digital era are encouraged to apply. Chinese Studies Librarian The University of Michigan Library seeks a Chinese Studies Librarian with experience conducting outreach to faculty, students, and other researchers focused on the study of China across the social sciences and humanities. The Chinese Studies Librarian will assume direct responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Chinese Collection, evaluation and selection of information sources related to Chinese Studies, reference and research consultation in supporting instructional programs designed for Chinese Studies. The incumbent will serve as the primary liaison with the Center for Chinese Studies and respond to the Center’s needs in coordination of its activities. Candidates with speaking, reading and writing fluency in Chinese, demonstrated knowledge of scholarly resources for Chinese studies, and those with a ALA accredited Masters degree, or advanced degree are encouraged to apply. Head of Asia Library The University of Michigan’s Asia Library has a long and distinguished tradition of building and providing access to comprehensive collections relevant to East Asian Studies. The Asia Library holds approximately 1 million physical volumes of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean monographs, serials, microforms, and media. The Head of the Asia Library provides strategic leadership for the University’s Asia Library in support of its role as a premier resource for East Asian Studies at the University of Michigan. The Head is responsible for ensuring that excellent user-centered services meet the constantly evolving needs of the University’s large and diverse user community. In addition, the Head informs the campus and broader community of the Asia Library’s resources and services. Providing executive oversight of substantial collections, endowments, gifts, and various budgets is critical to this position as is fostering a collegial and productive environment for library staff. The Head manages a staff of 11 FTE, including 3 professional librarians, and manages services and programs of the Asia Library in partnership with library-wide services and programs. Candidates with an ALA accredited Masters degree or an advanced degree in East Asian Studies or related field of study, and those with speaking, reading, and writing proficiency in one of the following languages: Chinese or Japanese, or Korean, are encouraged to apply.
