Posted By: Daniel Moss on November 10, 2005 J Rawls Album Release Party featuring Nu Soul Sensation, Eric Roberson. (Columbus, OH) All HBCU Alumni, Central State and Wilberforce Students, Family and Friends. HBCUConnect.com would like you to know that Music producer J Rawls will debut his album, “ The Essence of Soul,” on Friday, November 11, 2005 at Long Street Live, located at 40 East Long Street. Doors open at 9pm. The event will feature live performances from famed Nu Soul artist Eric Roberson and other performers: Tavaris, Middlechild, and Jonell. Music will be provided by DJ's O-Sharp and Krate Digga. Although J Rawls officially began his musical career in 1998, his introduction to hip hop began as a child. Like so many artists he got his start rapping and beat boxing on the corner block. Inspired by Hip Hop pioneers, he along with two friends formed the group, “Dope Beat Specialists.” Although miles away from New York, the birth place of Hip Hop, Rawls set out to leave his own lasting imprint on music. “We did it because we loved it. We did it because it made us feel a certain way and there was nothing like hearing your voice on tape,” said J Rawls. Years later, as fate would have it he was introduced to Talib Kweli of Black Star. Rawls was the musical architect behind the beats for the hit song,” Brown Skin Lady.” Since then he has worked with a variety of national and local recording artists: Masta Ace, The Beastie Boys, Jonell, Venus Malone, and Middlechild, just to name a few. J Rawls continues to demonstrate his love for Hip Hop and Nu Soul in his latest album, “The Essence of Soul.” This album is a follow up to his 2001 release, “The Essence of… In his recent project he collaborates with Eric Roberson, one of the most talented and respected artists in the Nu Soul movement, along with a host of up and coming local performers to craft this musical masterpiece.
