On the National Day of Service, NSBE-AEDC came together with Capital Cause, National Urban League Young Professionals, First-Book-Washington, DC, Empowering Sisters Through Unity (E.S.T. Unity), Congressional Black Associates (CBA), Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (YPFP), Young Non-Profit Professionals Network DC (YNPN-DC), Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Washington, DC (RPCV/W), We The Readers, and Healthy Families for an inspiring event aimed at ending illiteracy in Ward 8 schools.

The DC chapter was also joined by members of the NSBE AE Atlanta chapter visiting Washington, DC for the presidential inauguration.
The Yes We Can: END ILLITERACY Service Event helped to gift nearly 2,000 books to 2,000 children who currently attend five Ward 8 DC Public Schools. In addition to supplying books, 415 volunteers also painted literacy murals, organized libraries, helped teachers with bulletin boards and created audio books.

On a follow-up visit to the schools, four of the volunteers were able to get a first-hand glimpse of how their efforts brightened the days of the students. Students expressed both surprise and gratitude as they opened their new composition books and highlighters. Through events such as this and other PCI programming, NSBE-AEDC commits to the academic development of students in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
