My College Essay

My College Essay
Posted By: Ay’sha Williams on March 28, 2013

As a child, my living situations were not the best. Raised by a single parent, I was surrounded by negativity. I watched good people succumb to drugs and alcohol, young kids give their lives to gangs, and families struggle to keep the bills paid. But, at what moment did I decide that I wanted out the ‘hood’? When did I realize this life was not for me? What actions did I take to ensure that I did not end up like the people I saw growing up?

It was the summer of 2006. It was 4th of July and everyone was having fun. The aroma of fireworks and barbeque was in the air. Everything was good. Then a fight between a group of boys broke out. Suddenly, gun shots were fired. A revered neighbor was shot and killed. He was only seventeen. At this very moment, I knew that I had to get out of the neighborhood. I knew if one innocent life could be taken, then mine could have been taken as well.

I realized that I could not live my life like my sad neighbors when I recognized my potential.

I was smarter than most of my peers. I had what they lacked, which was ambition and drive. My peers did not have any goals. There was nothing that they strived to be. As for me, I aimed to become the best and give my all. My effort is what separated me from them. My effort is what will take me further in life.

To be sure that I did not end up like the rest, I made some changes in my life. First, I started going to church. My faith in God became stronger. Second, I distanced myself from the people that I knew were malicious to my change. If they were not beneficial to my future, then I cut them loose. Third, I began to challenge myself. I enrolled in rigorous classes and pushed myself.

In addition to taking the steps previously stated, I must attend college. College is the ticket out of the neighborhood. It is also the path I must take to achieve my goals and make my family proud of me. With college, I will beat the odds that face me. I will become what I was destined to be.
