NSU defeats Morgan State, 7-2, 4-2

BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior Stephanie Wheatley pitched a solid outing in the second game to aid the Norfolk State softball team to a series sweep of Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field. NSU won the first game, 7-2, and scored two runs in the top of the seventh to earn the victory in Game 2, 4-2.

NSU’s offense was not nearly as productive as Saturday’s contest, won by the Spartans 17-7. Wheatley and fellow junior Jamie Schulle received enough help from the Spartans’ bats in pitching a pair of complete games. The victories moved NSU to .500 overall at 18-18 and more importantly 11-1 in MEAC play.

The team maintained first place in the MEAC Northern Division and guaranteed itself a spot at the MEAC tournament in May.

Wheatley (1-1), who had only pitched 4.2 innings the entire year coming into Sunday, gave up six hits and two unearned runs in all seven innings in the second game.

Schulle (12-10), meanwhile, gave up five hits and two earned runs in seven innings of the first game while working around the five walks she issued to Morgan State (2-30, 0-9 MEAC).

Sophomore Alina Moriarty drove in three runs in the first game, while freshman Whitney Williams hit 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior Nikki Jones hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning of the second game to break a 2-2 tie.

Dunning went 3-for-4 in the first game, while Boyd had a pair of hits in both contests and scored three runs. Christina drove in all four runs on the afternoon for the Bears.

SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AT HOWARD

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University defeated Howard in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at Baneker Park, winning the first game 10-1 in five innings before taking the second game 18-1 in five.

The Lady Pirates are now 20-21 on the season and 7-1 in MEAC play.

Burruel went 3-for-3 at the plate in the first game, driving in three runs. Ponds added two hits in four at-bats, while Rouse and Ferguson each drove in two runs.

Senior Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) held Howard to just one hit in picking up her 14th win of the season. She struck out six batters in five innings of work.

Hampton got off to a quick start in the first inning of the second game, pushing across six runs in the opening frame. Burruel started the scoring with a single that brought in two runs, before scoring herself on a passed ball. Ferguson then doubled home two more runs.

Vallejo and McCoy each had three hits in the second game, and Vallejo drove in a team-high five runs. Ferguson added three RBIs.

Jackson scattered six hits over five inning of work in the second game, picking up her 15th win of the season and striking out six – marking the 17th time in her last 23 appearances that she’s recorded at least five strikeouts.
