AppDay is a kickoff activity apart of a larger initiative started by several employees at Microsoft in concert with TEALS and passionate teachers at Rainier Beach to bring programming curriculum to Seattle schools. We need the help of software engineers in Puget Sound to make this initiative a success!

AppDay will take place on May 23rd from 10am – 1pm. It is a one-day app creation workshop with students from all over Puget Sound.
So far, 16 schools have registered 200+ students for the event and a lot of them will be beginners. We are actively looking for software engineer volunteers to help with mentoring the students. The students will be broken down in smaller workshops and follow ‘templates’ to build games. You will be with the students answering their zillions little questions.
Send an email to appday2013@gmail.com to register as a volunteer.

FAQs:
Q: What programming environment are students going to use?
A: All the students will be building apps using http://touchdevelop.com.

Q: Hey, I’ve never heard of TouchDevelop, can I still help?
A: Absolutely!!! If you are a professional developer with knowledge about Java, C#, C, C++ or any other imperative programming language, you will feel right at home with TouchDevelop. Here is dev bootcamp to get you ramped up.

Q: Why don’t you use Eclipse/Visual Studio/xCode/AppInventor?
A: Because TouchDevelop runs on any device with a browser, it allows the event to rely on students device – regardless of the operating system or form factor. We have been using TouchDevelop at Rainier Beach so it was easier to organize the event around it.

Q: Can I run a workshop?
A: We are also still looking for workshop leaders. Do you like to be on stage in front of dozens of amazed kids? This is your chance!

Q: I have more questions before I sign up. Who should I contact?
A: Please reach out to Peli de Halleux (jhalleux@microsoft.com) for any other questions.
