Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 31, 2013 Date: April 12, 2013 Title: Director of Accessibility Job ID: 422 Hours: 40 Hours/week 52 Weeks/Year Salary: Meet and Confer Grade 16, $61,612 Reports to: Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Close date: May 10, 2013 SUMMARY GRCC invites applications for the position of Director of Accessibility, reporting to the Provost. The Director serves as a consultant to the College community on existing and emerging technologies designed to improve accessibility and educates teaching faculty about developing curricular content that is accessible to students with disabilities. Responsibilities include interpreting and evaluating the technologies that teaching faculty might use in developing accessible curricular materials; improving faculty members' access to these technologies at the College; coordinating a College-wide effort to develop a strategic approach to improving the accessibility of academic resources; identifying best practices for increasing accessibility through contact with national organizations, peer institutions, and GRCC students and faculty members who need increased access; participating in College-wide efforts to develop new teaching technologies to address issues of accessibility through the process of designing and developing curricular materials; providing expertise to non-academic units throughout the College as they work to address accessibility concerns related to online communications; adheres to best practices in universal design, and continuous monitoring of GRCC’s online presence which includes, but not limited to the grcc.edu web site, online center and Blackboard. PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES Academic - Educates teaching faculty about developing curricular content that is accessible to students with disabilities. Coordinates work with the Center for Teaching Excellence. - Works with and provides training programs for developers of web content to ensure that all content and links are accessible. - Researches, interprets, and evaluates technologies that teaching faculty might use in developing accessible curricular materials. Serves as consultant to Disability Support Services faculty regarding emerging technologies. - Works with faculty, and staff to clarify GRCC’s responsibilities under Section 508/ADA. - Conducts workshops on accessibility issues for faculty and staff and orientates all new staff on ADA policies. - Identifies campus wide needs for compliance with disability laws and regulations and advocates for appropriate resources in the budget planning process. - Attends meetings and conferences in the field of higher education and disability and promotes an educational and societal environment at GRCC that values disability and embodies equality of opportunity. - Develops and implements internal measures and/or reports which inform the GRCC administration of the status of ADA compliance and opportunities for people with disabilities. Legal - Serves as the principal coordinator for GRCC's programs, projects, policies, and procedures relating to GRCC's compliance with Section 508 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. - Ensures that all instructional materials and software purchased by GRCC for student, faculty, and staff use is compliant with technology standards specified in the ADA and other applicable federal and state laws regarding discrimination on the basis of disability. - Responsible for making College leadership aware of specific impediments to full compliance with section 508and the Americans with Disabilities Act and for offering and implementing solutions to bring the college into compliance. - Remains current on all disability laws and regulations and administrative decisions impacting GRCC disability compliance obligations and informs others as necessary. Documents GRCC compliance initiatives. - Ensures the timely filing of all required ADA technology compliance reports. - Maintains current information regarding best practices of other colleges and universities relating to ADA compliance. Technology: - Serves as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Technology Coordinator for Grand Rapids Community College. This person is the principal coordinator for GRCC's programs, projects, policies, and procedures relating to GRCC's ADA technology compliance. This person is also the internal liaison to GRCC departments and external liaison to organizations, institutions and government agencies with respect to ADA technology compliance. - Serves as the central intake for matters relating to ADA technology compliance issues and provides direction to GRCC departments regarding responsibilities related to ADA technology compliance. - Identifies resources to test and consultant with IT staff regarding accessibility issues within GRCC information technology services. - Audits GRCC’s web sites, which include but are not limited to the public web site, online student center, Blackboard and Continuity to identify accessibility issues for remediation. - Ensures that technology access issues are identified, communicated, and resolved. - Keeps ADA technology compliance resource materials updated and distributed to staff.
