Cox topped the JSU defensive backs with eight pass break-ups and 13 passes defended.

Cox closed the year with 50 tackles (36 solo) including five for a loss and two sacks on a defensive unit the led the league in sacks with 43. He was named to the All-SWAC First Team at the end of the regular season after receiving defensive player of the week honors in October.

In his first season in the league, Eugene (5-11 • 175 • Sr. • Miami, Fla.) racked up 38 tackles, four interceptions (2nd in the SWAC), four pass breakups and two touchdowns. In the last game of the season, he was named SWAC defensive player of the week after scoring two defensive touchdowns in a win over Texas Southern. He returned a fumble 100 yards for a score and an interception 31 yards for a touchdown. Eugene also had two interceptions in the contest.

All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration. The winner will be announced January 8, 2014.
