CU Student Emmanuel Tyler Receives Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on June 18, 2013 Cheyney University junior and Keystone Honors Academy scholar, Emmanuel Tyler, has received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the amount of $4,500 to help fulfill his dream of studying abroad. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. This congressionally funded program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education through its office in Houston, TX. Tyler is currently studying abroad this summer through the PASSHE Honors Program, sponsored by the Keystone Academy. The program offers a multicultural and interdisciplinary experience through a number of cities in Western Europe including London, Salzburg, Vienna, Venice and Rome. The program focus is the rich musical and media heritage of the region along with various acoustical and communication features of Europe’s most famous venues. Tyler plans to study in Spain next semester through the School for International Training based in VT. He will participate in its Language, Community and Social Change program in Granada, Spain which combines intensive language study with coursework on Spain’s society and community service. Students are completely immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment and have the opportunity to rapidly improve their Spanish by living with host families while examining the political, social, and cultural forces shaping contemporary Spain. The program’s seminar explores Spanish society and the social changes that the country has undergone in the context of its turbulent history, growing diversity, integration within the European Union, and recent economic challenges. Lecturers are drawn from the University of Granada, government agencies, local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and experts from the community. Most classes, including language instruction, are held at SIT’s partner institution, CELEI (Centro de Lenguas y Educación Intercultural). He became interested in languages and international travel while completing his General Education foreign language requirement by studying Spanish with Dr. Patricia Montenegro. His interest in the language motivated him to move beyond the two semester requirement to Spanish III where his love of learning and progress in the language so impressed his instructor, that he was encouraged to declare a minor in Spanish. Tyler was given the opportunity to study at the Spanish School of Middlebury College. He was offered a scholarship to spend seven weeks at the School’s intensive immersion program at Mills College in California in the summer of 2012, where he spoke nothing but Spanish and participated in a variety of cultural activities and earned nine credits in the process. Participating in the activities of Cheyney’s Students of All Nations organization and United Nations Association increased his desire to understand other cultures, to travel and to eventually work in international affairs. He chose Political Science as a major, and sought opportunities to study abroad through the Office of International Programs. At the Study Abroad Fair held in April during the University’s International Festival, Tyler met with representatives from the School for International Training and applied for programs in both Spain and Chile. Before engaging in his semester-long trip to Spain, Emmanuel will spend two weeks this summer participating in the PASSHE Honors program study abroad experience in England and Austria. Director of International Programs and professor of French and Spanish, Dr. Norma George, says "I am delighted to see students take a language requirement and turn it into a passion. I hope that Emmanuel’s success would encourage other Cheyney University students to study abroad and to aspire to become fluent in a language.
