JSU band, student-athlete capture top HBCU awards

Jackson State University’s famed Sonic Boom of the South Marching Band and Olympian and student-athlete Anaso Jobodwana took top awards among historically black colleges and universities at the annual HBCU Media Awards.

Hosted this year by Jackson State University, the program acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of historically black colleges and universities throughout the United States. The band and Jobodwana were among JSU’s four nominees for awards. Other contenders included JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers, who was nominated for best female president of the year, and public policy and planning professor Dr. Bennett Odunsi, who was nominated for male faculty of the year.

The Sonic Boom of the South began in the 1940s consisting of college students and students from Lanier High School. Through the years it has become known for intricate, precision marching and the big band sound.

The band has performed many halftime appearances for the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Cincinnati Bengals, and performed during a television special for Motown’s 30th Anniversary and the 34th NAACP Image Awards. The Sonic Boom was recently featured on the HLN documentary "American Journey."

Jobodwana competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash in the medal round. In the semi finals he was able to run almost stride for stride with Usain Bolt - the fastest man in the world. To date, he has the second fastest official time in the nation in the 100-meter dash. The rising junior is already a three-time All-American (two for indoor track and one for outdoor track - to date). He owns the SWAC record in the 100- and 200-meter dash (both indoors and outdoors). Jobodwana is currently the No. 2 ranked internationally in the 200-meter dash. In June, Jobodwana finished in fourth place in the 200-meter dash at the 2013 NCAA Championships with a time of 20.29. Two days prior, during the preliminaries, he finished second with a time of 20.02. Jobodwana earned a first team All-America nod with his performance at the championship.
