Eastern Washington University invites applications for a Africana Studies Coordinator for its Africana Education Program.

The position reports to the Director of Africana Studies. Its key responsibilities involve outreach, avocation and retention. While position focuses on outreach and retention of African American students and other students of African descent, position is also expected to support the university's overall recruitment and retention efforts and assist in advising and support of Africana Studies--Race & Culture majors. He/she will develop and manage student programs and services for first-year students of African descent. Provide transition programs and aid in the retention of this population typically through focused, short-term and/or one-time special events; and, to work with faculty, staff, current students and alumni to attain these goals. Also, provide college success workshops and other initiatives in the community at local churches and organizations.

Position will be open for applications at least through 8/15/2013. Screening will begin on 7/12/2013. All materials will be held in strictest confidence; references will not be contacted until candidates have been notified.

Minimum Qualifications:


1. Masters degree in an area that matches one of the following:

---African American/Africana Studies
---American Studies with strong focus in African American content knowledge & communities
---Cultural Studies or Counseling with strong focus in African American content knowledge & communities
---Student Affairs with specific experience and demonstrated interests working with students of African descent
---Education with strong focus in Africana content knowledge and communities
---Other fields such as Sociology, Ethnic Studies or Psychology with strong focus in African American content knowledge and communities

2. Be student-centered and have a strong sense of responsibility for student success;

3. Be detail-oriented and organized;

4. Have strong prioritization, time management, and follow-through skills;

5. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, pay attention to detail and produce desired results;

6. Ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner both orally and in writing;

7.



Ability to work independently and as a member of a team;

8. Ability to take direction and possess the ability to work independently under general supervision to meet the needs of program;

9. Ability to collect data and produce reports based on data;

10. Capacity to effectively address diverse constituencies;

11. Knowledge of high school to college and college to graduate school transition

12. Ability to generate ideas for new and modified first-year transition and retention programs for upperclassmen.

13. Advanced computer skills to include Microsoft Office, Apple and other applications and technologies necessary for data access/retrieval and communications; Specific experience with Excel spreadsheets and developing databases.

14. Ability to develop workshops for faculty and staff to develop cultural understanding of African American students and their experiences.

15. Ability to collaborate with instructional faculty and staff in all subjects and skills to make learning more effective for African American and other students of African descent by incorporating African American relevant content and pedagogy and performance styles of diverse students into the general education curriculum

16. Ability to develop, plan and teach College Success & First year Courses;

17. Ability to work with campus service units to disseminate information and encourage dialogue to improve cultural awareness;

18. Ability to work with and engage a wide range of understanding and skill level of campus faculty, staff, and administrators in working with African American students and their families;

19. Demonstrated understanding of African American culture, and the ability to work with culturally and economically diverse populations, including first generation students.

20. Additionally, candidates must offer a demonstrated high degree of interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency or diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:


1. Masters in African American/Africana with focus in Student Affairs or Education

2. Previous work experience in minority affairs, minority achievement, retention, college preparatory programs, recruitment, student advising and first year experience;

3. Teaching experience or presentation/workshop planning, design, development and implementation

4. Work experience with students of African descent and their families

5. Direct experience working with, developing or coordinating retention initiatives or related work geared specifically to students of African descent;

6. Direct experience or familiarity with grant writing
