Dillard Welcomes Cadre of Brazilian Teachers for Summer ESL Program

Dillard Welcomes Cadre of Brazilian Teachers for Summer ESL Program
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on July 10, 2013

Dillard University’s Center for Intensive English Language (CIEL) in the Office of International Students and Study Abroad Programs (OISSAP) became the first language program at an HBCU to receive 24 public school teachers from Brazil to study English as a second language through the Professional Development Program for Teachers of English Language in the USA (PDPI).

The teachers arrived on June 23rd and will remain in the program for six weeks. While in the program, they will strengthen their written and oral fluency, learn new teaching methodologies and assessment approaches, and gain an understanding of online resources, and other tools in the continuing education of teachers.

The summer program is a continuation of a joint agreement between the HBCU Alliance and the Brazilian Government, an initiative created by President Barrack Obama and Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil in a commitment to send more than 100,000 Brazilian students abroad.

At least a dozen students from Brazil arrived at Dillard last spring. "The 12 students who arrived in the Spring of 2013 were successful at meeting their English language goals and are now eligible to receive academic training at Dillard University and a host of other Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country, according to Dr. Kimya Dawson-Smith, director of CIEL and OISSAP at Dillard. "We are truly proud of these students and the faculty and staff who have worked hard to ensure the success of our program"

The CIEL Program is excited to have these students and is looking forward to receiving 28 new students in the fall, as well as additional students and teachers in the spring of 2014.
