Salary: $27.37 per hour to 32.84 per hour; Duration: This is a 12 month seasonal position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
· Under the Director of Capital Arboriculture and Horticulture, advise architects, landscape architects, engineers and other construction professionals as to the best practices for the preservation and protection of trees on City parkland before, during and after park construction projects.
· Perform tree inventories, tree condition and hazard evaluations and prepare tree damage assessment reports. Recommend tree and site damage mitigation applications. Review proposed tree removals and associated replacement tree values prior to bid and during construction as the need arises.
· Review recommendations with Borough Forester for approval and incorporation into design documents. Work with designers to formulate and optimize tree and site protection plans, including designation of staging areas, vehicular access routes, tree protection zones and any other specifications as appropriate to minimize impact of construction operations.
· Work with Resident Engineers and Landscape Construction Specialists to implement and enforce standards and guidelines relating to site work around trees included in the approved Site Protection Plans. Coordinate with the Engineers and Landscape Construction staff to ensure all pruning and arboriculture work in construction occurs under the supervision of a certified arborist and according to contract specifications.
· Research new materials, methods and policies relating to tree protection, preservation and urban forestry.
· Conduct trainings for agency staff in tree biology, species selection, maintenance and tree and site protection methods.
· Work with other divisions of Parks, including Central Forestry & Horticulture, Borough Forestry offices and the Natural Resources Group to ensure agency standards for planting operations, tree health and tree protection practices are maintained.
· Represent Parks at community and other agency meetings as appropriate.

Qualifications:
1.



A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of full-time satisfactory experience managing and /or inspecting one or more construction projects which must have a total cost of at least $300,000 for each of the five years of the required experience; or
2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, architecture technology, landscape architecture, construction, construction technology, or construction management and one year of the experience described in 1 @ above; or
3. A valid license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued by a board of examining engineers or architects duly established and qualified pursuant to the laws of any state or territory of the United States and one year of the experience described in 1@ above; or
4. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a combination of at least two years of the experience described in 1@ above and the college education described in 2@ above to equal a total of five years of educational and experience. One year of credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education leading to a baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, architecture technology, landscape architecture, construction, construction technology, or construction management up to a maximum of three years of credit.
LICENSE REQUIREMENT
At time of appointment, eligibles must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Certification as an Arborist or Board Certified Master Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture; or Registered Consulting Arborist by the American Society of Consulting Arborists.
2. A master’s degree from an accredited university in Forestry or a related subject; or 7 years of experience in tree preservation and protection, pruning, installation and establishment, diagnosis and treatment of insect and disease problems and other related arboricultural services.
3. Strong knowledge of agency structure and divisions and/or government operations.
4. Excellent writing, supervisory, administrative and inter-personal skills.
5. Leadership and negotiation skills, ability to reconcile input from multiple stakeholders while meeting overall organizational objectives.
6. A valid New York State driver license.
