Bennett College Will Host B-Ball Tourney
Posted By: on November 17, 2005 Bennett College will host its third annual William "Bill" Trent Basketball Classic on Friday and Saturday in the college's newly renovated Ida H. Goode Gymnasium. Women's basketball teams from Bennett, Salem College, Spelman College and Danville (Va.) Community College will each play two games. The tournament honors former basketball coach Bill Trent, who coached an undefeated Belles team from 1934 to 1936. In 1944, Trent became the first executive director of the United Negro College Fund. Tickets cost $5 per game for adults and $3 for children. For information call 517-2173. Friday's games: Salem vs. Spelman, 6.; Bennett vs. Danville, 8. Saturday's games: Danville vs. Salem, 1; Bennett vs. Spelman, 3. VOLLEYBALL HIGH POINT OUT: Lillian Henderson hit 19 kills to lead fourth-seeded Birmingham-Southern (14-14) to a 24-30, 30-18, 30-26, 30-27 win over fifth seed High Point (16-17) in the Big South Tournament. Jamie Kaufman had 19 kills and 24 digs for High Point. GIRLS SOCCER STATE CUP: Three local teams won state championships this past weekend at Bryan Park. Greensboro Twisters Green captured the Under-15 title in the U.S. Youth Soccer division, the top level of competition. The team went 3-0 in bracket play to enter the 2005-06 N.C. Youth Soccer Association Final Four in Greensboro, then beat teams from Raleigh and Jacksonville to win the title. Greensboro Twisters Gold won an Under-17 title, and the Greensboro Anacondas needed penalty kicks to pull out an Under-18 championship.
