Johnson C. Smith University President Awarded by Latino Community

Johnson C. Smith University is proud to announce that Dr. Ronald L. Carter, president of Johnson C. Smith University, has received the Latin American Excelente Award for his continuous efforts to support the Latino community.

He will be honored at a gala organized by La Noticia, The Spanish-Language Newspaper, on Oct. 5. The gala will take place at The Westin Charlotte. All proceeds from this event will support the Latino Student Scholarship Fund of the La Noticia Foundation.

The purpose of Excelente is to acknowledge the dedication of business and community service people from the Latino community and one person from the community at large who has helped the Latino community.

Carter joined with the Latin American Coalition and Latin American Women in the fall of 2010 to help provide more educational opportunities and scholarships to Latino students. It is because of these efforts that the university now serves 129 Latino students.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize Dr. Carter with the Excelente Award 2013 in the category: Non Latin Person Most Supportive of the Latino Community, for his great efforts to support the education of so many of our Latino students. He is making a tremendous difference in the lives of these outstanding Latino students,” said Hilda Gurdian publisher of La Noticia.

Carter wanted to ensure that Latino students feel welcome from the moment they step on campus. They are assigned to a liaison when they first arrive and have the opportunity to participate in new student orientation to help them better adjust to their new surroundings. They also take part in programs such as Hispanic Heritage month events that enable them to share various aspects of their culture with members of the student body.
