Harvard University Job Opening: Director of Alumni Relations and Publications

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on July 31, 2013 This position is responsible for strategic planning as well as oversight and implementation of programs and projects that engage alumni, strengthen their connection to GSAS, and underscore the key priorities of the Graduate School. Collaborates with Administrative Dean and senior team on outreach efforts and strategies that focus and engage alumni leaders in GSAS mission; provides overall direction for alumni communications in articulating the excellence and impact of GSAS, as well as the accomplishments of alumni and the key role of GSAS students in research at Harvard. Strategically plans and oversees alumni programming activities including GSAS alumni day; bi-annual meetings of the GSAS Alumni Council; the Centennial Medalists’ Award Luncheon; manages and travels to 12-15 alumni chapter events per year, domestic and international. Organizes Global GSAS events, establishing a presence for GSAS in Asia and building connections with the GSAS international alumni population. Collaborates with alumni leaders in planning regional alumni events and establishing a firm GSAS presence in cities with large alumni populations. Identifies and works with faculty speakers for program events and panels. Collaborates with faculty chairs, University Development, and other key stakeholders to plan and develop yearly Alumni Day and Departmental Reunion Day, signature events for GSAS that draw alumni from around the world back to Cambridge to engage with each other and with Harvard research, and helps to support Development activities. Forges relationships with key alumni Council members; meets and communicates with alumni council subgroups to support and motivate them in their role as Dean’s advisory committees. Collaborates with senior communications officer in developing a strategic communications plan which includes print, web, and social media, to engage and inform our graduate students, alumni, prospective applicants to GSAS, departments and programs, and others. Collaborates with other units across the Graduate School to promote the work and goals of those offices, including admissions, financial aid, diversity recruitment, student affairs, fellowships, Dudley House. Oversees the publication of GSAS’s most prominent materials, including the GSAS guide to admissions, recruitment materials for underrepresented students and students in the life sciences, and the GSAS Student Handbook. Works with the GSAS Dean, Ad Dean and others to develop, plan and implement activities and events that support the Dean’s key priorities and new initiatives such as the Harvard Horizons Scholars program, which showcases graduate students and the importance of their research. Manages and oversees logistics for this and other special events, such as the Dudley House 20th anniversary, to promote greater university engagement with the GSAS community. Oversees highly complex Commencement activities and logistics, including materials, publicity, ticketing, catering. Participates on University-wide Commencement planning committee. Will collaborate closely with Director of International Strategy and Development on global outreach efforts to alumni and friends and strengthen the GSAS relationship with our international population. Provides supervision and leadership for the alumni relations and communications staff, including senior writer, project coordinator, web administrator and staff assistant. Management responsibilities include building and developing a diverse and effective team; planning and delegating work effectively; communicating and monitoring performance expectations; motivating and developing direct reports; and ensuring compliance with Harvard and FAS policies and procedures.
