Medgar Evers College’s School of Professional & Community Development (SPCD) today announced a new Geriatric Care Management program to launch this fall as part of its Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) program. The new program will prepare social workers, registered nurses, and those working in, or seeking to work in the field of gerontology to become Geriatric Care Managers. Classes begin Monday, September 30, 2013 and will end on April 2, 2014. A full description of the new program can be viewed in the online Continuing Education catalog at www.mec.cuny.edu/ACE.

“Caring for our elder population is an important component of public health; and as people look to enhance and diversify their skills, enter the work force at a different place, or make career changes, it is important to pay attention to the trends that are emerging and those that are consistent,” said SPCD Dean Dr. Simone Rodriguez-Dorestant. “As we recognize this important shift, we are pleased to offer this opportunity to professionals seeking to enter the growing field of elder care.”

Participants must have at least an Associate’s degree to join the program. Eligibility requirements to sit for external certifications are based on level of attained degree and experience in direct practice. The Program will be taught by a wide range of professionals – experienced in various aspects of elder care, and will include the following seven courses: Introduction to Gerontology; Normative Aging; Mental Health and Aging; Management & Business Planning; Conducting Assessment & Developing a Care Plan; Caregivers & Senior Living Options; and Elder Law.

“Our new Geriatric Care Management Program will enable more nurses, social workers and other professionals to transition into the ever-expanding world of elder care,” said ACE Director Jonathan Bissell. “Our stellar team of instructors are excited about the opportunity to help build the field of elder care professionals in New York City.”
