Monticello Job Opening: Curatorial Project Assistant (Mulberry Row & Mansion Restoration Research)

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on August 08, 2013 The Thomas Jefferson Foundation, the non-profit that owns and operates Monticello, the historic home and estate of Thomas Jefferson, is seeking the following positions: Project Assistant (Mulberry Row Project, Curatorial Department). [Position #495] Monticello seeks a project assistant for our Mulberry Row and dependencies projects. The Project Assistant will assist with the restoration and interpretation of Mulberry Row, the dynamic, industrial hub of Jeffersons 5,000-acre agricultural enterprise and the center of work and domestic life for free whites and enslaved workers, as well as several unrestored dependencies. This 32-hour per week, temporary position, is for a minimum of 18 months. The project assistant will assist the Foundations architectural historian and interdisciplinary project team with the recreation of two buildings, the study and modeling of 22 structures on Mulberry Row, and the completion of a smartphone app or optimized website. Qualifications: The Mulberry Row Project Assistant will have prior experience documenting historic buildings through archival research, photography, and measured drawings. Additionally, the successful applicant will have demonstrated capacity to independently research vernacular buildings, historic building technology, and material culture from 1775-1825. Other requirements include knowledge of digital photography, Word, Excel, Photoshop, AutoCAD and Access; excellent written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational ability, including the ability to work on several projects concurrently. Must be detail-oriented and possess the proven ability to meet deadlines. Bachelors degree in Architecture, Historic Preservation, Art History, or Architectural History is required. Masters Degree in Architecture, Historic Preservation, Art History, or Architectural History is preferred. Deadline to apply is July 26. Research and Project Assistant (Mansion Restoration Project, Curatorial Department). [Position #496] Monticello seeks a project assistant to assist with the furnishing of the upper floors of Jeffersons house. This temporary position, for a minimum of 12 months, will assist with research in Jeffersons papers, family papers, Monticellos files, and other archives related to domestic life and material culture of Monticello. The Research and Project Assistant will also investigate appropriate furnishings and artwork, help locate them, and then assist Curators in a variety of tasks, including working with vendors and furnishing specialists, compiling reports, and sharing new information to staff and the public through blogs and other social media. Qualifications: The Curatorial Research and Project Assistant will have excellent knowledge of American and French decorative arts, substantial documentary research experience, and fine communication and writing skills. Proficiency with Word, Excel, Omeka, Photoshop and the ability to create visual presentations are necessary. Must have excellent organizational ability, including the ability to work on several projects concurrently. Must be detail-oriented and possess the proven ability to meet deadlines. M.A. in Decorative Arts or American Art History is required. Deadline to apply is July 26.
