Posted By: How May I Help You NC on August 12, 2013 Occupational Summary Duke Web Services (DWS) is seeking a Front-End Web Developer with Drupal and WordPress development experience to join the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Web Services team. The position is responsible for the development and support of websites and associated digital services in support of Duke University's faculty, staff, and student groups. The position requires a genuine passion for cutting-edge technology, and the ability to assess feasibility of projects, write functional requirements and specifications, and research and recommend technical solutions. This position reports to the Manager of Duke Web Services in OIT. DWS has produced award-winning sites, applications, and print materials for many areas of the Duke community. Work Performed Deliver highly customized web-based software solutions that support the mission of the university by specifying, planning, designing, developing, implementing and supporting the web technology infrastructure of the institution. Code pixel-perfect (or close to it) HTML/CSS based on Photoshop files using XHML, jQuery/JavaScript, and detailed layout techniques. Build and manage responsive websites in Drupal and WordPress. Develop reusable Drupal and WordPress themes with custom PHP as needed. Strong understanding of site functionality, site architecture, data flow and intuitive navigation schemes are expected. Maintain expertise on state of the art and emerging web technologies, such as HTML, CSS, integration of JavaScript/JQuery, and integration of XML/XSLT. Recommend standards for acceptable design and content of Duke University application interfaces and processes in coordination with University standards and policies. Collaborate and assist with the oversight of third-party web developers providing services to DWS and Duke University. Develop time estimates for project deliverables. Identify, develop and maintain a library of reusable tools assisting in their customization to specific purposes by departmental personnel. These may include Drupal modules and/or WordPress plugins. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Required: - 3 - 5 years experience working in front-end web development with content management systems including Drupal and Wordpress - Experience working in a Linux-Apache web server environment - Comprehensive understandingof web development technologies including PHP, XHTML,CSS, XML, XSLT, JavaScript, jQuery, and AJAX - Ability to generate technical specifications from functional requirements - Ability to continuously learn and assimilate new technologies - Motivated, focused and self-guiding, works well on a small team - Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills - The ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences is critical Preferred: - Understanding of and practical experience in responsive web design - Familiarity with Web Services delivery technologies and techniques, including SOAP and REST - Experience writing, maintaining, and tuning enterprise-scale web applications - Familiarity with version control systems, such as Git Education/Training: Bachelors degree (Computer Science or related field preferred) and a minimum of 3 years web development/programming experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. ENVIRONMENT The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is responsible for managing Duke campus# IT infrastructure, service and support including academic research and enterprise applications. OIT provides leadership and expertise in many areas of Information Technology to Duke entities, including faculty,staff, and students. Specific services deliveredinclude voice, data & video communications, institutional email and administrative applications (payroll, financial ledger, student systems etc.), database, web infrastructure, desktop & helpdesk support, student computing, data center services, and high-performance computing & academic software systems. OIT is also responsible for developing/upgrading the physical IT infrastructure around campus and maintaining 23 student computer labs. OIT is a member of Educause, IVY Plus, Commons Solution Group (CSG), and has representation at many of the leading technology consortiums that are driving the future growth and use of technology.
