ReMi’s impressive lists of credits include working with Amy Winehouse, Nas, The Fugees Usher and Miguel. Wilds, best known to fans as actor Tristan Wilds, has earned acclaim and recognition on television and in movies alike such as HBO’s “The Wire,” CW’s “90210,” “The Secret Life of Bees” “Red Tails.” Wilds’ debut album, New York: A Love Story is scheduled for release on September 17, 2013. “Mack is extremely talented and his experiences of being born and raised in New York City has offered him a unique musical and lyrical perspective for this generation,” says Grammy Award-nominated producer SalaAM ReMi.“ He’s a natural from acting to singing. Come along for the ride with Mack, to experience his first love: music and his home NEW YORK,” he adds. The album’s lead single “Own It” was written by Mack Wilds and R&B superstar Ne-Yo, who also helped produce the track alongside SalaAM ReMi. “Own It” tells the tale of a young man who has everything in the world but has his heart fixed on a girl to share it all with. In the corresponding music video, which includes an appearance by BMX Biker Nigel Sylvester, cameras follow Mack at various locations throughout New York City as he engages in graffiti art. Mack realizes that someone mysterious has been spray painting over his work – he then comes face-to-face with the mysterious girl whom shares his same love of culture and artistic expression. The single is currently available on iTunes and is airing on radio stations across the country. In addition, the music video premiered exclusively on MTV on July 30th and Mack is making a special appearance for the BET premiere of the video on 106 & Park on July 31st. As for the direction he wanted to take the album, Mack says, “The main thing that we wanted to do with this album was to reflect what New York City is all about and who better to do it than the people who made it what it is in the first place,” he adds, of working with the line-up of accomplished producers and collaborators on the album. Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, Mack says that music has always been his first love and dreamed of a career in music from a young age, who credits his musical influences to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z and Nas, among many others. Growing up in New York City, Mack was immersed in music and recounts his surroundings, living in the inner-city and listening to hip-hop as his major inspiration to record this album – to reflect the feeling of all that New York City is – from the sounds, diversity, artistry, daily grind, the good, the bad and the beautiful. Tristan Paul Mack Wilds is best known for his acting roles as Michael Lee and Dixon Wilson on HBO’s “The Wire” and CW’s “90210” respectively, but before he hit Hollywood, Wilds dreamed of a career in music. “I don’t remember a time in my life when music wasn’t a factor in my life,” the Staten Island product says. “I was immersed in what music was in the ’90s. Everything we heard in hip-hop, I could look outside of my window in the projects and see it going on.” Growing up, Mack saw his father sing in local bands. He looked to follow in his dad’s footsteps by practicing around their home in Stapleton housing projects, the same housing projects that produced numerous members of Wu-Tang Clan. Wilds’ earliest music influences were Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, but he also took to hip-hop idolizing MCs like Jay-Z and Nas. At around the age of 13, after puberty hit, Mack noticed his voice began to change and he then added rapping to his repertoire. “The music has always been my first love,” he says, even though his teenage years were spent acting on television and in films like 2008’s “The Secret Life of Bees” with Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning and in 2012’s “Red Tails” alongside Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terrence Howard. “Even with all of the accomplishments, I still feel like I haven’t scratched the surface of where I’m supposed to be,” Mack says. To further his career and dreams Mack released a free-seven song EP Remember Remember in 2011. The next year he hooked up with Grammy-nominated music producer Salaam Remi and signed with his Sony-distributed Remi Fa record label. Together the two recorded New York: A Love Story, a 1990s hip-hop-centered, R&B-laced tale of love and loss. The album’s first single “Own It” is produced by Salaam and written by Mack and R&B superstar Ne-Yo. Backed by a kinetic drum track and a feel-good groove “Own It” is reminiscent of a throwback party when hip-hop was fresh, new and exciting. Mack compliments the boom-bap with his whispers of sweet nothings to his dream girl, with promises of a lavish life. The flirtatious thump of “Henny” and the seductive allure of “My Crib” both provide balance mixing calming melodies over harden hip-hop sound beds. While New York: A Love Story weaves a romantic tale, sonically it’s a nostalgic reminder of the Big Apple’s most defining sounds-- suited for 2013 of course. The storyline takes place over the course of several songs and begins with the in-the-club anthem “Henny.” “First off, it’s Hennessey, partying and wilding out and then you meet that girl and you want to bring her home,” Mack describes. Mack’s tale begins in the club, but eventually moves to the bedroom. It’s the detail in his story which makes the album so special. “We can take it back to my crib, we can get away no photographs,” he sings in true heartthrob fashion on “My Crib.” Then immediately after on “Don’t Turn Me Down,” Mack tries to persuade his cold-footed lover to give in to his advances. Tracks like “Land of the Wild” featuring Mack’s fellow Staten Island-native Method Man add to the authentic feel of the album. Aside from Salaam, celebrated NY beat architects DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Havoc lend their production efforts, while Ne-Yo, Rico Love and James Poyser collaborate on the writing side. Mack of course adds flowing harmonies over the pounding tracks. “The main thing that we wanted to do with this album is show that New York City is back and who better to do it than the people who made it what it is in the first place,” he says of being able to work with such an esteemed team of producers. “This is that full-on, old school, New York, boom bap that we’ve been waiting for. This sound isn’t just old school; this is what is in our blood.
