Find your career and a world of excitement, adventure and fulfillment through opportunities with the U.S. Coast Guard!

HBCUConnect.com founder Will Moss announced a new partnership between HBCUConnect.com, the largest portal and career site targeting the community of students, faculty and alumni of historically black colleges and universities, and The United States Coast Guard, the nations first line of defense providing safety and security for our maritime borders. This partnership, is designed to help spread the word about Coast Guard scholarship opportunities, many of which go unfilled. The Coast Guard currently has an initiative for U.S. citizen sophomores and juniors at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and certain institutions serving Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.

“Many people don’t understand the unique and important role The Coast Guard plays in our safety,” said Will Moss, founder and CEO of HBCUConnect.com. “The Coast Guard is a special force that has multiple roles. It provides safety and rescue services for distressed boaters in the ocean and even in our fresh water lakes and rivers, it inspects commercial vessels and makes sure cruise ships are safe, it keeps drugs, contraband and criminals from reaching our shores in its law enforcement functions, and it serves as our nation’s fifth fighting force in times of war.” Unlike the other armed forces, the vast majority of Coast Guard positions are based within the United States.

The Coast Guard’s “College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative” (CSPI) is a scholarship program that is tailored for motivated scholars already demonstrating academic and leadership excellence, looking for a way to give back to their community through service. Students enlist in the Coast Guard, complete basic training, and receive a full-ride 2 year scholarship. This includes not just tuition, but also books, fees, a U.S. Government salary, housing allowance, and medical benefits - all while still attending their current school!
In addition to regular academic coursework, the student will participate in 16 hours a month and 4 hours per week of Coast Guard activities. Upon completing their junior year, students are paid to attend a 3 week leadership training course, and after graduation, a 17 week Officer Candidate School. Upon successful completion, students are commissioned as full Coast Guard officers. Unlike ROTC programs, CSPI participants are active duty government employees with a salary and benefits, while still an undergraduate student, and without having to work a full time job.
