Black Life Viewed as Despicable
|
Posted By: Camille Daniels on December 28, 2013 When Best Man Holiday came out last month I didn't have the chance to see it that very weekend. I did however read a large range of blog posts and articles about how shocking it was for a film w/ a positive imagery of black people was such a surprise. Ok, granted it only was given more of a buzz because of an article headline in USA Today. I remember being so surprise that a movie which was just meant for fans of the first one could get people so upset. I was also surprised but yet understood where one of the many blog posts I read explained why all black cast films have issues being so successful outside of the United States. I can't remember which post or article it was but I just remember reading a line of out the article saying that people around the world view black life in America as despicable or some other term for less than. Making it hard for them to want to relate to us because...who wants to live a despicable life? No one does, so why support it? Well that line just stuck with me, it stuck with me because I thought well you can't just look at the people and say "well they are just despicable". I say, you need to take a look at the larger picture and understand how some of us got here. How for some of us life really is that rough and for some it isn't. Overall, we are a beautiful people who have done more than enough of dealing with crap both done to us and amongst ourselves. I like how we are deemed as not worthy of connecting too or viewed as not equal to the people who are viewed as the ones to emulate. And yet no one questions the actions of those who everyone else wants to emulate aka certain white folks. No one questions how they treat us. It as if it is solely on us and the ones that cause some of the pain don't exist. I hope people will begin to think. To begin to analyze and to realize there is more than one image of black people and that we are human beings therefore our lives are not so grotesque.
