Kente Cloth at Graduation Ceremonies

Kente Cloth at Graduation Ceremonies
Posted By: Camille Daniels on December 28, 2013

When it comes to traditional graduation attire at a graduation ceremony there are just certain things you expect to see on graduates. Obviously the gown and the cap and then there are extra things maybe a a colorful cap with something funny on it or a shout to a love one or asking for a job. Maybe students have cords to show honors success or possibly a sash from a particular organization they've participated in. However what blows my mind is the Kente cloth. From what I know of the Kente cloth many black students wear it in honor of our ancestors to show homage to them.

So when I see people who don't look a thing like myself or the rest of us...who decide to don the kente cloth I can't help to do a double take.

I do a double take because when I think of all that people of African decent have gone through and someone just casually decides to put it on. I'm surprised and confused and I think it's so interesting that people are so quick to want to put something like that on but yet can treat us like garbage under the law and just in general. I don't know why they wear it or if they have healthy reasons as to the point of wearing it. But what I do know is this, I feel like if you are going to wear it and you have no direct cultural connection than maybe you shouldn't wear it since it doesn't connect to you. But it is America so do what you feel just remember that you might be insulting a few folks with it. And if you can act "down with the people" with you at graduation than you better be able to do it in real life post college.
