It’s often times in the underground that you find the best lyricists, the best rhymes, and compelling sounds. That’s exactly what you get from “Motivational Rap” from Marcus “M-Positive” Parker. From the first track on this record “Long Time Coming” you get a speedy delivery that is true to the name, and illustrates a big picture of thanksgiving. Now, before you assume that this is another hack, or something that is not good at all, take a listen. A lot of bad rappers try to come through and say that they are alternative, or they are “positive” but the reality of their game is that they are just trying to get a record deal through other markets. That’s not the case here, because everything is well thought out. You hear that through “Street Motivation”, a very humble approach. Take away the beats and you will hear the essential bars you need for rap, and that’s what makes this compelling. Marcus knows how to rap and he knows how to position the rhymes in a way that doesn’t sound out of place, which makes his voice a far more powerful tool than a lot of other hip hop upstarts. For those that are looking for an alternative hip hop record, with a lot of attention to the craft and organic, signature beats, this is for you. You’re going to hear something new, as Marcus completely opens up his heart and soul with every track. If you listen carefully you will hear that motivational connection that makes this all positive. It’s hard to find rappers that are truly committed to what they are doing and then dishing out rhymes that are filled with stories. That’s the biggest difference you get with this release, it’s storytelling in a way that is so unique that you can close your eyes and see a drama play out. At this point, it’s easy to just wax poetic, but it’s important to understand one thing above all else, this record stands on its own. It’s unique, flowing, and worth listening. Motivational hip hop is impressive, but only in the hands with an artist that can do more with the English language than just throwing slang and cuss words through. You will not find another MC that combines the message of positivity without pretense. This is not about hype, not about bling, not about drinking, drugs, or anything like that. It’s more organic, still raw, and above all else, it’s positive. Don’t get this wrong, it’s not religious, which can sometimes turn people away. That’s not to say that Christian rappers aren’t good, but more so a testament of how Marcus “M-Positive” Parker has found a niche that works well and delivers on all cylinders. Lastly, if you took away the rhymes, you still have a very interesting mix of beats, sounds, and clips. This is not a sampled mess, it’s not heavy on production, it just gives you enough. The minimalism works at time, and delivers a great underscore for the easy flow that Parker sends out. All in all, this record is a compilation of tracks that truly are what they say they are, 100% positive and without hype, pretense, or any sort of heavy message that will hit you over the head. It’s this type of storytelling that is admirable, and needs to be heard by more people. A great investment.
