At Hampton University, Energy Sec. Moniz to Echo President’s State of the Union Call to Make America a Magnet for Good Jobs and Innovation

On January 31, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz will travel to Hampton Roads, Va. to highlight President Obama’s State of the Union address at Hampton University, one of the nation’s top historically black universities and a leader in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.

Following the visit to the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), Secretary Moniz will tour Hampton University, meet with students in STEM education, deliver remarks and take questions from the student body.

The Secretary will focus on President Obama’s State of the Union address and discuss the Obama Administration’s commitment to making America a magnet for good jobs, business investment and innovation. Specifically, Secretary Moniz will highlight the opportunities available in the energy sector, which has been an important economic driver for America in recent years.

He will also emphasize the importance of STEM education to ensure American workers have the skills they need for the in-demand jobs of today and the jobs of tomorrow.

In his State of the Union address this past Tuesday, President Obama outlined an all-of-the-above vision for American energy that will leave our children and grandchildren with a “safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy,” while “strengthening protection of our air, our water and our communities.” A strong, innovative and skilled U.S. workforce is critical to achieving this vision. President Obama’s address reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to “preparing students with skills for the new economy – problem solving, critical thinking, science, technology, engineering and math.”
