Your Guide to Win FINAO’s Career Catapult

Your Guide to Win FINAO’s Career Catapult
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on January 31, 2014

There are jobs and then there are opportunities. The FINAO Career Catapult, an internship contest specifically for HBCU Connect students, is one of these rare opportunities to get in on the ground floor of an exciting new company in Seattle, WA.

Part technology, part apparel, all innovation, FINAO is creating a new branch of social media that promotes goal-setting and accountability, supported by a positively charged community.

HBCU Connect students can apply to win this paid opportunity by uploading a video about what the internship means to them.

We asked the judges what they are looking for in the ideal candidate’s video and they gave us some insider advice and tips that will get you – and your video – noticed and possibly land the gig:

1.) True to you
Forget all the buzzwords and corporate jargon that your parents or professors have told you to use. The FINAO judges want to hear you speak from the heart.

Scripted or off the cuff, FINAO wants to get a glimpse of who you are. If you love to be active, shoot your video outside, while on your favorite hike. Art lover? Shoot your video inside your studio and show us what you’re working on.

Anything that can help us see who you are, what you love to do and why you love it is a good thing.

2.) Short and Sweet
If you’ve ever heard the term “Leave them wanting more!” you’ll have some clue as to what FINAO considers the ideal length of a video.

If a minute is long enough to share what you hope to get out of the FINAO internship and what skills you brings to the table, great. A minute thirty? Super. But a five minute montage of baby pictures, you playing an acoustic version of Royals, and a tour of your apartment? Not so much.

Tell us your name, your major/minor, where you’re from, what school you go to, what your strengths are and how you can contribute to the FINAO team. Anything else is up to you.

,b>3.) First impressions happen once
Before recording your video, think of your personal brand – who you want to be seen as and what you are representing. If you’re a tech genius how can you clearly communicate that in one minute? If your goal is to be in sales, sell us on you.

Consider the whole package: What do you want to look like in the video, what are you wearing, what’s happening in the background. What’s the one thing that you want us to know about you: that you’re eager? That you’re willing to learn? That you have a lot to teach us?

This doesn’t mean that you have at have a sound stage set up and a high-quality camera. Your web cam or iPhone will work just fine; it’s how you present yourself …not the production value of your video.

Internship videos are being accepted now and already over 1,000 of your classmates are interested in applying. Submit your video today so you can take advantage of this paid learning opportunity. Good luck!
