HBCU to Consider The Legalization of Marijuana
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on March 11, 2014 With the legalization of marijuana being such a hot topic these days, Sixth Ward Alderwoman Christine Ingrassia will address various issues surrounding the debate during an open forum at Harris-Stowe State University, Monday, March 24, 2014, 6-8 p.m. in the Emerson Performance Center’s Bank of America Theatre. Held in collaboration with Alderman Chris Carter, 27th Ward, and Alderman Shane Cohn of the 25th Ward, the panel discussion will address how marijuana arrests disproportionally affect people of color; whether marijuana is safer than alcohol; how legalization would affect black market drug sales and whether a marijuana tax would benefit declining government revenues. Panelists will include individuals on both sides of the argument from representatives of Show Me Cannabis, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and others from law enforcement and judicial organizations. Attendees will be able to pose questions and discuss concerns. Harris-Stowe State University, located in midtown St. Louis, is a fully accredited four-year institution that offers 14 degree programs in the areas of Teacher Education, Business and Arts & Sciences. In 2013, HSSU ranked no. 1 in the state in degree production of African-Americans in mathematics (MDHE). The university, which has been in existence for more than 150 years, offers the most affordable bachelor’s degree in the state of Missouri and is home of the Don and Heide Wolff Jazz Institute.
