Bowie State Lecture Series Brings Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez

Bowie State Lecture Series Brings Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez
Posted By: Hija Chang on March 14, 2014

World-renowned poets, activists, and scholars Nikki Giovanni and Sonia Sanchez will discuss their literary works and professional experiences with Bowie State University students in two free public lectures, as part of the Global Woman Project Lecture Series. Both events feature open question-and-answer forums and book signings immediately following the programs.

At “An Afternoon with Nikki Giovanni,” Giovanni will share from a collection of her poetry with English composition students and the public on Friday, March 14 from 2-4 p.m. on the Main Stage in the Fine and Performing Arts Center. The students are reading her book, The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni: 1968-1998.

Before the public event, Giovanni will lead an interactive writing workshop with about 40 sixth grade students from the Robert Goddard Montessori School in nearby Seabrook, Md., taking place from 12-1:30 p.m. in the Fine and Performing Arts Center. The focus will be the use of artistic writing as a way to confront oppression, excel academically, and develop a healthy foundation for social and emotional development.

Known for her fiery activism in the pursuit of justice and equality, Giovanni has published some 30 books for adults and children and has been awarded more than 20 honorary degrees. She is a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.

“An Evening with Sonia Sanchez” will take place on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Communication Arts Center, Myers Auditorium. Before the public lecture, Sanchez will lead a small group of selected Bowie State students in a creative writing workshop. English composition students are also reading Sanchez’s work before the evening event.

Author of more than 15 books, Sanchez is a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award. She has lectured at more than 500 universities and colleges in the United States and has presented her poetry to audiences in Africa, Europe, Australia and the Caribbean. She was the first Presidential Fellow at Temple University and held the Laura Carnell Chair in English at Temple University.

Sponsored by the Department of English and Modern Languages and the College of Education, the Global Woman Project Lecture Series provides forums for the Bowie State community and the public to engage with distinguished female scholars and leaders.

The series brings together speakers from different disciplines, with a focus on bridging the achievement gap through discussions to encourage reading, writing and critical thinking.
