Get hired as the Study Abroad Advisor at Bucknell University!
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on May 02, 2014

Bucknell University seeks a Study Abroad Advisor to help students develop knowledge and skills for interpreting the commonalities and differences among human societies, including diverse cultural perspectives and traditions within the United States and internationally, to enable living and working effectively in a global context. Bucknell University currently sends over 40% of its student population off campus and expects this number to grow. The Office of International Education is responsible for advising these students on over 160 off campus studies options. As an institution, Bucknell University is committed to enhancing the international character of its community, and strongly supports off-campus studies as one avenue through which students can become tolerant, reflective, global citizens. The Study Abroad Advisor reports directly to the Director of International Education. This position is responsible for all aspects of advising, administration and programming for a portfolio of approved off-campus studies programs, including some faculty-led programs. In addition, this position oversees several areas critical to the successful functioning of the office including internal publications, assessment and global learning programs. This position is scheduled for 10 months per year (likely to increase to 11 months).

Responsibilities

Advising and Program Administration: The advisor will have administrative and advising responsibilities for a portfolio of off-campus studies programs, including some faculty-led programs. The advisor is responsible for finances, day-to-day administrative details, and communication with students and providers, prior to, during, and after the off-campus study experience. The advisor will meet with Bucknell students who are exploring the possibility of off-campus study and will advise them on specific program options. The advisor will work with each student to identify the program most suitable to his/her academic needs, and will explain all application procedures.

Though the Office of International Education Bucknell assigns study abroad/off-campus advising by acacdemic fields, regional expertise in the non-English speaking world highly desirable.

Programming and Reentry: The advisor will conduct information sessions each semester, will assist with the organization of an annual off-campus study fair, and will conduct in-depth pre-departure orientation programs. The advisor works with students upon their return to facilitate their cultural reentry, to ensure that their academic records have been properly transferred, and to involve them in activities such as the study abroad fair and pre-departure orientations. The advisor is also responsible for marketing the off-campus study programs under his or her purview both internally and externally as appropriate.

Library and Resource Management: In collaboration with the appropriate international education staff member, the advisor will maintain and manage the information housed in the Office of International Education library, including handouts and publications available to the students as they research their program options.

Special Projects: Special projects/other duties will be assigned by the Director of International Education as appropriate. These may include, but are not limited to, planning and facilitating global learning programs, planning for domestic and international visitors, generating statistics for campus and public constituents, attending regional and national conferences, and visiting approved programs under the position's purview.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

Three years of international education experience such as study abroad or related work abroad.

Academic advising or teaching experience.

Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
