Norm Lewis, first African American actor to star as The Phantom

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 19, 2014 Media correspondent Tanisha LaVerne Grant was live on the red carpet May 12, 2014 as history was being made on Broadway as veteran actor Norm Lewis took over the role as The Phantom , in the Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's long running hit The Phantom of The Opera playing at the Majestic Theater. Lewis who is paired with actress Sierra Boggess as Christine Daae' is the first African American actor to star as The Phantom in the New York production. Tony award nominee Robert Guillaume succeeded original star Michael Crawford in the Los Angeles production. Lewis earned a Tony nomination for Porgy and Bess, and has also been seen in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables, as well as Sondheim on Sondheim, Sice Show, The Wild Party, Dessa Rose and Miss Saigon. Bursting with enthusiasm the crowd erupted in cheers Monday night. Norm Lewis brings his elegance and powerful voice to the role of Phantom. In attendance were legions of fans, press, friends and family, icons like Melba Moore and Andre De Shields......and of course the show was sold out so get your tickets now.
