Texas Southern University Featured as the June Tom Joyner School of the Month

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 20, 2014 In June 2014, Texas southern University will be featured as one of the Tom Joyner Foundation Schools of the Month. Each morning of the month, TSU will be promoted by the “Fly Jock” himself on the Tom Joyner Morning Show to raise funds from listener donations. “I'm excited about the Tom Joyner Foundation's initiative to adopt Texas Southern University as the school of the month for June. I applaud Tom Joyner for his vision - a vision so apropos to the times - when students at colleges across the country are struggling for scholarships so that they can complete their degrees on time. Many times, our students attend college part time and work full time, and this delays their graduation by two, sometimes three years. With adequate scholarship monies, our students can concentrate fully on their studies instead of using study time to work part time jobs – jobs that I consider detractors and distractions. We are appreciative of all the efforts of the Joyner Foundation. With Tom Joyner and his team supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities, we are destined to succeed. Texas Southern University students can be seen in all walks of life - in careers of the future. They study Aviation Science Management and learn to lead airports and pilot state-of-the-art aircraft. In Urban Planning and Public Policy they learn to build communities and develop cleaner and safer environments. In Sport Management, they are teaching athletes how to invest and prepare for life after sports. In Entertainment and the Recording Industry, Emergency Management and Homeland Security, and Maritime Transportation, they are becoming major decision-makers capable of handling millions of dollars in investments and accounts. Tom has been raising money for HBCUs for many years, and this year is critically important to our students. With Pell Grants cut and parent loans difficult to receive, students need our support now more than ever before. They're nearing graduation; many with one, maybe two semesters remaining, and this scholarship money will help get them over that final hump. I encourage you to support Tom Joyner Foundation, and in doing so, you support Texas Southern University - Houston's only HBCU, where we proudly prepare students for careers of the future." Look for exciting events and announcements throughout the month of June and visit the Texas Southern website for updates. One event being planned is a "Party with a Purpose," where attendees will purchase a ticket for a chance to win prizes and gifts. There will also be raffles, door prizes and an auction.
