How many African Americans in leadership positions at Facebook & Google?

Posted By: Will Moss on May 28, 2014

Say what you want about Jesse Jackson, he brings up a very good issue. These companies make millions of dollars off of African American users or consumers yet it's very hard to find African Americans in leadership positions.

Many companies use the reasoning that tech companies can't hire blacks because there are not that many graduating with technical degrees out of college.

I don't accept that as a good enough answer, because these same companies will spend money to market to new consumers, why can't then invest money in marketing to college students at HBCUs at the point where students are choosing their majors, invest money in relationships with HBCUs and developing curriculum and talent. This is nothing new for many companies, but when was the last time you saw facebook or google at an HBCU career fair???

True Leadership create their own paths. The original development of higher education is to liberate not be an institution psychological mind set of self slavery. The founder of Facebook was an individual with idea that help create social media. Do you know who invented the traffic light, blood transfusion, air conditioning. Stop looking for someone to enslave you. Read more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., W. E. Dubois....etc.

While I promote entrepreneurial ideas, as I am one. I also worked as a part of a team in corporate America and enjoyed it and it worked out well for myself and my family and actually helped me launch my own business. But I can tell you with 100% absolute certainty that most people are either not able to be entrepreneurs or have no desire to be entrepreneurs and I respect that as well. This particular subject is about those of us that support these corporations, holding them responsible for investing back in our communities by looking to hire and train people of color where it makes sense. I see nothing wrong with that.

We must stop looking for or creating a back door, when our ancestors fought and lost their lives so we can enter the front door.

I would like to be sure people understand your point. Could you clarify for the benefit of the thousands of people that might read your thoughts? I think what Jesse Jackson is doing, in this case, is the same type of thing our ancestors fought to do, but now the battle has to be fought differently. My point is simply that companies that profit from all markets should also reinvest in these same markets and it makes good sense to put an effort towards diversifying their workforce and myself as an African American user of facebook have a problem with them for not making a serious and public effort to hire African Americans at all levels. Simple as that. So yes, at the same time, I created my own social network for AFrican Americans long before facebook as an entrepreneur and to provide a resource to our community, but at the same time many of us still use facebook and they profit from our patronage, so lets make them do the right thing.

Look at the make up of the political machine, African Americans make up higher demographic of members the democratic party some tenured in Congress due to affiliations, you look to them for real reason entrepreneurship. In college were you taught in depth about enterprise leadership, business management, accounting and entrepreneurship.

Blacks are not flocking to live in Silicon Valley unless you are talking about San Francisco. Google is in Mountain View and Facebook is in Menlo Park. Although Jesse is correct that they lobby for H1Vs, there is no shortage of talent at the executive level like there is at the technical level. There is no incentive to hire blacks and Latinos for the sake of hiring blacks and Latinos. On the technical side, the amount of blacks and Latinos graduating with technical degrees is pitiful. Most blacks tend to major in soft fields like psychology, criminal justice, social work and education.
