Posted By: How May I Help You NC on June 30, 2014 The Writing Program at Bates College seeks a specialist in scientific and quantitative writing for a part-time (30-hour), 10-month academic year position beginning August 2014. The Writing Specialist for the Sciences and Quantitative Writing provides support for both students and faculty in the sciences and other quantitative-focused courses across the curriculum. Support for students includes one-on-one tutoring in writing, dedicated work with senior thesis writers, and group workshops on aspects of scientific and quantitative writing. This Writing Specialist also trains and oversees Technical Writing Assistants linked to some academic departments and would guide an expansion of this peer-tutoring resource to other departments and programs. The Writing Specialist consults with faculty about integrating writing into their courses, designing effective assignments, and responding to and assessing student writing. The Writing Specialist conducts outreach to faculty in the sciences as well as to faculty in other disciplines who wish to incorporate more quantitative-focused writing into their pedagogy. QUALIFICATIONS Required qualifications: Ph.D. in scientific discipline or closely related field; experience with quantitative writing and writing pedagogies; experience teaching writing and/or providing academic support at the college level Preferred qualifications: Knowledge of current composition theory and best practices; experience training or supervising undergraduate tutors; work with multilingual writers; familiarity with oral communication pedagogies.
