Pharrell Williams gave Tuskegee a shoutout while schooling the crowd on Richie's history and roots with The Commodores. "He never stops being completely original," he said. Fellow former Tuskegee University student radio DJ Tom Joyner along with other Commodore members discussed Richie's college years. Several artists covered a combination of hits from Richie's lengthy music career. John Legend took to the stage to sing Richie's "Hello" and the Commodores' "Still." Ledisi followed soon after with an energetic version of "Brick House." Gospel singer Yolanda Adams sang "Jesus Is Love" that brought the Staples Center crowd to its feet, including Richie himself. "The funny thing about this award is exactly 30 or 40 years ago when I started writing all these crazy songs, I must tell you, these are all the songs they told me would ruin my career," he told the crowd.
