My TSU Experience: Cierra Joshua

She threw the shot put and discus for the Tigerbelles. The Detroit, Mich., native is a member of Golden Key, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies. She was a criminal justice major with a 3.63 GPA and graduated with honors on May 10. TSUTigers: Talk about your overall TSU experience. A: Overall I can honestly say that my TSU experience has been great and I do not regret coming to Nashville. I have had internships that have allowed me to network with people in my career field and I was privileged to meet a lot of individuals from all over the world who I can call friends. TSUTigers: What do you love most about TSU? A: What I love most about TSU is the family atmosphere, which really shows during homecoming. Coming from a small high school, Tennessee State had a good student to teacher ratio. TSUTigers: What will you miss most about TSU? A: Other than certain people and organizations that I am apart of, I will miss being the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and meeting with representatives from other Universities. TSUTigers: What is your most memorable track and field moment at TSU? A: My most memorable track and field moment would probably be when Coach Cheese made the throwers run a relay. People had been telling us all morning that there will be an A, B, C, D and E team but we did not believe that the throwers would be running, but we had to run. TSUTigers: What is your most memorable non-track and field moment at TSU? A: My most memorable non-track and field moment would probably be interning with the Nashville Police Department Special Operations Division’s Bomb Squad and Hazardous Device Unit and being able to go to the gun range and do riding with the officers. TSUTigers: What advice would you give to incoming freshman? A: Make the best out of your four years. Work hard for what you want and when you don’t get it, work harder. Get involved and stay involved with community service. If you are religious continue to go to church and stay in the word. Most importantly never give up and stay focused in your studies. If you need help paying for college or books research grants you may be eligible for and proceed to ask TSU Foundation and ask Financial aid for assistance in a professional manner. TSUTigers: What was your most challenging class at TSU? A: My most challenging class at TSU would have to be an upper division Psychology course called Principles of Learning. TSUTigers: Who was your favorite professor? A: I actually have two favorite professors and they Dr. Teresa Kent Todd (Spanish and French) and Dr. Lisa De La Mothe (Psychology) TSUTigers: What organizations were you a part of outside of track and field? A: I joined the National Council of Negro Women my sophomore year and would not trade the friendships I developed with these young ladies for any other organization. TSUTigers: Who have been the most influential people to you at TSU? A: The most influential people to me at TSU were Dr. Smith, Patrice Elder and Dr. Kitchen. TSUTigers: What’s next for you? A: After graduation I plan on becoming a member of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. TSUTigers: Once you are an alumnus, how will you stay connected with TSU? A: I plan on starting a scholarship that will begin in January of 2015 in order to stay connected and support the efforts of the TSU Foundation. TSUTigers: What do you know now that you didn’t know coming in as a freshman? A: That College is more expensive than I thought. I know that if you don’t ask for things you think you may be eligible for, then you will not receive them. TSUTigers: What have you learned at TSU that you will keep with you for the rest of your life? A: One thing that I learned at TSU is that patience and listening to what people have to say will get you far in life. You never want to rush into something without researching or knowing what you are going into. TSUTigers: Is there anything else that you would like to say to the TSU family?
