2014, A Good Year for HBCUs to Quietly Flip and MOOC
|
Posted By: Roy Beasley on August 01, 2014 As the year 2013 wound to a close, the Academic Old Guard lulled itself into an inertial stupor, convinced that the previous two years' discussions of the pending MOOC "revolution" in higher education were just the blatherings of ambitious con-men, a noisy media vaudeville that would fade away if ignored for long enough. Fortunately, the critics were wrong. MOOCs and other technological innovations are just the opening shots of the long overdue revolution in higher education. Here's a clip from the "About Us" pages of the Harvard-MIT edX program for MOOCs: "Our goals, however, go beyond offering courses and content. We are committed to research that will allow us to understand how students learn, how technology can transform learning, and the ways teachers teach on campus and beyond." Unfortunately for the vast majority of black students, there are powerful "gotchas" in the stirring edX manifesto: -- Why should we expect that innovations designed for (mostly white) students at (mostly white) elite universities will close the persistent achievement gaps between black and white students at non-elite colleges and universities at some point in the future? -- Indeed, if trickle down academics had worked in times past, then 50 years after the Civil Rights Revolution, why are black/white achievement gaps so persistent at the vast majority of the nation's integrated, mainstream institutions? Fortunately, our negative answers to these two questions suggest a third question for which our answer is both obvious and positive: Question: Where are we more likely to find researchers who are dedicated to developing innovations that really can close the black/white achievement gaps? Answer: At colleges and universities that have substantial black enrollments, i.e., at HBCUs and other minority serving institutions. It is important to note that the researchers themselves need not be black. However their location at HBCUs and other minority serving institutions should make it easier for them to develop MOOCs, flipped classrooms and other technological innovations in ways that are especially beneficial for black students.
