In fact, according to Sallie Mae’s How America Saves for College 2014, the total amount of money saved for college is up 30 percent from last year, and 29 percent of those saving for college are doing so with a 529 plan. These families are enjoying the benefits of a professionally managed investment account that grows federal tax-free and will not be taxed when the money is withdrawn as long as it’s used toward qualified education expenses.
