The City College of New York is the number one Regional University in the North for racial and ethnic diversity, according to U.S. News & World Report 2015 rankings. City College offers the most enriching learning experiences where "students are most likely to encounter undergraduates from a different ethnic group from their own."

U.S. News factored in the proportion of minority students (sans international students) based on the 2013-2014 academic year student body. With 1.0 as the highest, the diversity index for City College is 0.76.

"City College is one of the most diverse institutions in the country, and our students are forever transformed by their unique experiences here. We are also excited to be highly regarded among our peers, particularly for academic excellence," said Lisa S. Coico, president.

Overall, City College is ranked #65 among 620 Regional Universities in the North.

The strongest factors for City College are:

Academic excellence—City College is among only one-third of the top 100 institutions scoring 3.0 or higher on a scale of one to five by its peers (presidents, provosts, and deans of admissions);
Retention—Freshman retention rate at City College is 84%; and
Alumni Giving—Alumni giving rate is 23%; City College is one of only three institutions in the top 100 scoring this high.

U.S. News defines regional universities as those providing a full range of undergraduate majors and master's programs and a few doctoral programs. Regional universities are in four categories—North, South, Midwest, and West—because they generally attract students from the surrounding states.
