HBCU Week, Panther Fest underway at Claflin University

HBCU Week, Panther Fest underway at Claflin University
Posted By: Hija Chang on September 24, 2014

Historically black colleges and universities offer culture, a rich history and rigorous academic programs. Most importantly, they prepare students for leadership and life after graduation.

Claflin University is celebrating the contributions of HBCUs and their impact on their communities during HBCU Week, Sept. 21-26. The community is also invited to show its Panther Pride during Panther Fest, which will run concurrently.

The theme for this year’s HBCU Week is “HBCUs: Innovators for Future Success.”

Claflin’s HBCU Week/Panther Fest Kick-Off was held at noon Monday on Panther Plaza. Student leaders briefly shared their HBCU experience, and Drexel Ball, vice president for administration at the university, read President Barack Obama’s HBCU Week Proclamation.

Five lucky students in attendance received one of two iPad Minis and three $100 book store vouchers.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Freshmen Assembly: Claflin University Sustainability Initiative Kick-Off, was held at 11 a.m. in Moss Auditorium at the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center.

Also on Tuesday, an Underage Drinking Prevention HBCU Town Hall was held at 6 p.m. in the Orange and Maroon Room.

Events planned for the rest of the week include:

* Wednesday, Sept. 24 — 6 p.m., International Student Association Power Hour, James and Dorothy Z. Elmore Chapel.

* Wednesday, Sept. 24 — 7:30 p.m., Different Faces, Different Cultures, Ministers’ Hall

* Thursday, Sept. 25 — 7 p.m., Pep Rally, Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center

* Thursday, Sept. 25 – 10 p.m.-midnight, Late Night Breakfast, Claflin University Dining Hall

* Friday, Sept. 26 – 7-11 p.m., Unity Greek Stroll Off, Panther Plaza

The purpose of HBCU Week is to strengthen the capacity of historically black colleges and universities to provide excellence in education.

All events are free and open to the public.
