Black Women in Computing at Grace Hopper Celebration for Women in Computing

Posted By: Rosario Robinson on October 27, 2014

At our annual conference, Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) for Women in Computing, Black Women in Computing (BWiC) were present and was engaged in various events and activities. BWiC is an Anita Borg Systers community.

On the first day, Google sponsored a reception for BWiC community and came out to meet our members. Two Black Women in Computing were recognized for their work: Barbara Birungi was honored with the Change Agent ABIE award. Ayanna Howard received the A. Richard Newton Educator ABIE award.

The second day was filled with a full day of mentoring from women in industry, academia, government and start-ups. There were 2 sessions dedicated specifically for Underrepresented Women in Computing (UWiC) so we had a chance to ask those questions we've always wanted to ask. BWiC had a great presence in the ABI Community pavilion and even participated in community hours with Kayra Hopkins (Spelman alumnus) discussing Pass-It-On awards and Chiamaka Okoroha (Bowie State alumnus) discussing her transition from recent grad to Microsoft.

On the last day of the conference, our founder and chair, Danielle Cummings led a lunchtime table topic discussion "Black Women in Computing On A Mission for 2015". If anyone is interested in more information and/or how to get involved, email her at bwic-keeper@systers.org.

The most exciting event BWiC was engaged in was the Saturday after the conference. In the spirit of the conference, we know that we must help give the next generation an introduction into STEM fields, particularly into Technology. We partnered with Team Beta from Hidden Level Games to present a FREE gaming workshop for underrepresented youth in the Phoenix area. We had a great turnout, great sponsors and still receiving rave reviews from parents.

As a proud graduate of Savannah State University, I'm very glad we're have big presentation at a large conference like GHC and give back to our community to pay it forward. But it also helps us raise awareness of how professionals from the Black community contribute to the tech industry.

Next on the agenda, ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing. Boston February 2015. Great speaker line up like President of University of Maryland Baltimore County, Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, and Jacky Wright, Vice President of Microsoft IT Strategic Enterprise Services and many others. Hope to see you there!
