Beloit education board brainstorms diversity issues, committee

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on November 18, 2014 By Hillary Gavan hgavan@beloitdailynews.com The School District of Beloit Board of Education brainstormed ways for the soon-to-be-formed Ad Hoc Diversity Committee and (E)Quality Committee to strengthen diversity at its Tuesday evening special meeting. The board voted to give the long-standing (E)Quality Committee the charge of working with the district and parents to empower the parent/teacher team, providing information to parents, support learning at home and help the district celebrate successes. Included in the vote was an amendment to bring Minority Excellence Coordinator Tasha Bell back to Kolak Education Center to work more closely with administration as she has been most recently stationed at the high school. At the meeting board member Michael Ramsdail said in the past the (E)Quality Committee had put on an early school program at the beginning of the year, with various break-out sessions with topics ranging from gangs to reading, which received good participation from minority parents. Ramsdail said it’s no surprise involvement with the (E)Quality Committee has died down. The committee needs to find ways to educate the community about the issues at hand. “I have some concerns about how we get information out about getting people to be part of the committee. We need to be creative with our minority excellence representatives,” Ramsdail said. Board member Mark Rand noted there is an equity coordinator with the district and questioned her thoughts regarding recent issues. “We haven’t heard from her and she may have some good ideas. So what are her thoughts going forward? How does she see the equality going forward?” he asked. In an interview after the meeting, Board of Education President John Winkelmann said the board wanted to affirm the (E)Quality Committee’s charge and existence, stressing its work will continue. He explained that Bell works to oversee diversity advocates — staff members with an addendum to their contract to support diversity — which are stationed at each school in the district. Diversity advocates are charged with recruiting parents to get more involved. When Bell is back at the district’s central office at Kolak, Winkelmann said she would be able to work more with administration on ways to recruit more minority staff members, including administrators, in the district. The board also voted to establish the Ad Hoc Diversity Committee with the charge of closing the achievement gap, addressing suspension/expulsion disparities, hiring minority staff and building an inclusive community and cultural competency within the district. Winkelmann said the board is still accepting potential members for the next week or so. People who are interested can email Michelle Shope at mshope@sdb.k12.wi.us. He said there are 11 people who have expressed interest in serving. The board will make the final decision who will serve on the committee.
