A Student's Perspective

Posted By: How May I Help You NC on November 24, 2014 My name is Oliver Borge and I’m a senior at Oakwood University pursuing a degree in Management Information Systems. I was extended the opportunity to visit Florida Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) as part of a sponsored trip by Oakwood University's School of Business. Initially, I accepted the opportunity to go on the trip, just to ascertain what the institution was about. I knew very little about the program, other than briefly speaking about the institution with my professor, Mr. Kyle Mackey, who obtained his Master of Science degree from there. What really peaked my interest in the university, was my discovery that FIT is designated by the Department of Homeland Security and National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence. Knowing this, I was convinced I needed to visit the school. We arrived on campus and were greeted very warmly by the professors at the institution. Dr. Ford and Dr. Carvalho. experts in the field of Computer Science and Cyber Security provided us with detailed information about the nature of their program and I was completely impressed. The projects, experiments and research the institution was undertaking or has completed were mind blowing. Many of the projects I did not even think were possible, and we had to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement to keep it under wraps. They explained the history about themselves along with history about FIT and I was impressed with the accomplishments they achieved in Academia and in the professional realm. The name of FIT has a great reputation of producing students who are ready for the challenges of tomorrow and Oakwood University's School of Business had prepared me academically and granted me the privilege to be considered for this next step. We were then escorted by current students and research assistants on a tour of the facilities and their labs. I was completely blown away by the projects on which they are currently working on. I was able to see some of the most cutting edge technology they were working on and all I could think about was that, "I want to do this!" Seeing how the research was being used to shape new technology was amazing. The professors told us the option of obtaining a graduate degree from the institution. The option would be a PhD program where my field of study would be computer science and along the way I would be able to obtain a master’s degree as well. Tuition would be paid for as well as receiving a yearly stipend. FIT went from not being on my radar to being the school of choice for me. I’m ready to accept the challenge that has been presented to me. Thank you Oakwood for granting me and students and alumni like me this opportunity.
